UConn's football team has seen its share of ups and downs this season, but one player who has steadily risen to the occasion is Cam Edwards, and we are not surprised! As reported in the Connecticut Post, after showing his potential against Duke on September 16, Coach Jim Mora is confident that we'll see more of Edwards on the field.
"I've been talking to you guys about Cam," Mora said after the game against Duke. "I like Cam. I think Cam is tough. We've got to get Cam Edwards on the field more."
The sophomore running back from Norwalk had his chance to shine in the recent game against Utah State, rushing for 73 yards on 13 carries despite the heartbreaking 34-33 loss. With two running backs leaving the team in the months leading up to October, it appears that Edwards is ready to step up in UConn's offense.
As the Huskies prepare for their upcoming game against Rice, Cam Edwards remains determined to give his all on the field. "Overall it's just me taking it one play at a time and one run at a time," Edwards said. "Everything will fall into place."
Cam Edwards, standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 202 pounds, was named the 2021 New Haven Register/GameTimeCT State Player of the Year after leading Norwalk High to a 7-3 record in his senior year. Initially, Coach Mora planned to use Edwards as a defensive back, but that changed midway through last year when Edwards switched to offense and became a running back.
Despite watching the first three games from the sidelines, Edwards seized the opportunity against Duke, finishing with 43 yards on 12 carries and a five-yard reception. With Devontae Houston's departure from the team, Edwards moved up the depth chart and rose to the occasion.
The game against Utah State showcased the best offensive performance of the season for the Huskies, with Edwards and his teammate Victor Rosa providing a much-needed spark. Edwards often found himself in the backfield with Rosa, who had 92 yards on 15 carries. The dynamic duo's performance contributed to UConn's 473 yards of total offense, including 218 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Ta'Quan Roberson's solid performance added to the excitement, making it clear that Edwards's move to running back might be permanent. Coach Mora praised Edwards and Rosa for their hard running, ball-handling skills, and pass protection, highlighting that they are not easy to tackle and consistently gain yardage.
