Carver follows the Norwalk Public Schools district (NPS) calendar. NPS decisions are reflected in Carver’s programming. As long as NPS schools stay open, Carver before & after school programs will be operating.
Carver cancelled several annual events in March at the Carver Community Center out of concern for our students, volunteers and staff. These events include the overnight College Boot Camps and the Carver Career Fair.
The annual Carver Spring Break College Tour had to be cancelled due to growing concern over the coronavirus pandemic and an abundance of concern for the health and safety of our students and staff. This will be the first time in 50 years this important opportunity provided Carver students will not take place.
All Norwalk Public Schools are closed tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, in order for the district to prepare for a potential coronavirus outbreak. The district is taking this step to organize lesson plans and materials to continue student learning at home, in the unlikely event of a long-duration closure.
NPS is already putting in place the following steps to limit exposure for students and staff:
Schoolwide assemblies are on hold. Schools are looking at creative ways to share within their school communities, such as videotaping.
Large group events will be postponed. This includes next weekend’s STEM Expo, as well as musical performances scheduled over the coming days at any school.
Hand-washing before lunch will be emphasized with adult supervision. Because each building has a different cafeteria set up, this may require changes to lunch waves or other adjustments.
Out-of-district and out-of-state field trips will be put on hold. Trips out of the country and groups scheduled to come to Norwalk have been cancelled.
Visitors, mentors and volunteers from outside the direct school community will be put on hold. Professional development sessions will be rescheduled.
Parent-teacher conferences scheduled to begin shortly will be conducted by telephone or video chat.
Athletic games and competitions can be held, but without outside spectators. There will be no travel to tournament games.
Any student or teacher traveling during April break to a country rated under a level 2 or 3 travel advisory by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will be subject to a 14 day quarantine before returning to school.
Aggressive cleaning and disinfecting protocols will be continued in schools and buses.
NPS and Carver will continue to be in close communication with the City of Norwalk and State Health Departments, as well as the State Department of Education, and will adjust measures as necessary as the situation evolves.
Parents and students are encouraged to watch for district emails and the district website and to check social media pages as well as the City of Norwalk website for updates.
