The Season of Small Miracles: How Carver’s Community Nurtures Generosity and Connection

The holidays have a way of making us pause just long enough to truly see each other. In these moments, we're reminded of the depth of human connection, whether it’s an unexpected card from an old friend or a fleeting act of kindness in a busy checkout line. Sometimes, these moments are even more profound — a stranger’s simple gesture that blossoms into a life-changing friendship or a quiet act of compassion that leaves an indelible mark.

At Carver, we see these small but powerful moments every day in the lives of our students. The holiday season is an especially poignant time for this, as traditions from diverse backgrounds come together meaningfully. This is when crescent moon trees, inspired by the Islamic holidays of Ramadan and Eid, take their place alongside Christmas trees adorned with ornaments and lights, and menorahs lit for the eight nights of Hanukkah. They all serve as a vibrant representation of faith, culture, and celebration. Together, these decorations reflect the inclusivity, creativity, and shared experiences that define the holiday season at Carver, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among our students.

It’s also the season when a new immigrant student, haltingly learning English, offers her school supplies to a fellow student in need. Her simple act transforms scarcity into a moment of compassion and understanding. These small gestures are potent reminders that faithful giving doesn’t come from abundance but from the willingness to share, even when resources are limited.

What matters most in these moments often goes unnoticed. Carver’s work — the countless hands-on STEAM projects, the imperceptible social-emotional teachings, the borrowed traditions, and the quiet kindnesses — unfolds daily with no fanfare in ways that are as subtle as they are transformative. These moments are the real gifts of this season: surprises that remind us how much warmer and brighter the world feels when we lower our guard, even just a little.

Our students thrive because of you — the donors, volunteers, program partners, and staff who bring generosity, patience, and hope to the Carver community daily. Your contributions create an environment where these small yet extraordinary moments can flourish.

This holiday season, we thank you for the countless ways you’ve supported Carver’s mission and enriched the lives of our students. May your holidays be filled with the same small miracles, quiet joys, and transformative possibilities you’ve helped us create. From all of us at Carver, we wish you every blessing this holiday season and into the New Year.

Happy Holidays from Carver.

Spreading Holiday Cheer: Carver Community Center's Magical Celebration Unites Neighbors and Brings Joy to All

This year, the holiday spirit came alive at the Carver Community Center thanks to an extraordinary collaboration with St. Luke's School volunteers (a junior class tradition) and generous community supporters. Our annual Holiday Party transformed our center into a winter wonderland of love, laughter, and shared joy.

As twinkling lights and festive decorations filled the space, something magical happened. Children's eyes sparkled with excitement as local businesses, sponsors, and community members gathered to ensure every attendee received a special gift. The room buzzed with anticipation, laughter, and the warmth of community connection.

Beyond the gifts, the evening was a celebration of unity. Families shared stories, created memories, and reinforced the powerful bonds that make our community strong. Festive music and delicious treats added to the cheerful atmosphere, creating an experience that will be remembered long after the holiday season.

The success of this event is a testament to the incredible spirit of generosity and togetherness that defines the Carver community. When we come together, we don't just celebrate a holiday—we celebrate each other.

Thank you to everyone who made this evening possible. Here's to the magic of giving, the power of community, and the joy from sharing moments of pure happiness.

From Hesitation to Inspiration: Gia's Journey Through Carver's Hospital Internship Program

When Gia Magana-Garcia first considered joining Carver’s high school paid internship program at Norwalk Hospital, she was unsure about stepping outside her comfort zone. Encouraged by her mentor, Carver’s Future Readiness Coordinator, Rayshonda Mitchell, Gia embraced the opportunity and discovered a new passion for healthcare. In her own words, Gia shares how this experience not only introduced her to exciting career possibilities but also gave her the confidence to pursue her goals and dream big.

Today, Gia is a University of South Florida – Tampa student studying to be a Physician Assistant. Here is Gia’s inspiring account of her Carver internship journey.

By Gia Magana-Garcia

I want to start by saying that Carver was one of the first programs that helped me explore outside my comfort zone. I’m the type of person who typically likes to keep things the same. Same people, same schedule, same environment.

When my friend, Mary Lupinacci, a student in the Carver program the previous year, told me about her experiences in the hospital internship and with Mrs. Rayshonda Mitchell, I was a little hesitant about pursuing it. I knew it would be an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge on possible future careers, but it would mean surrounding myself with different people and activities.

I met with Mrs. Mitchell to better understand the internship; she heavily influenced me. Mrs. Mitchell was a person I felt comfortable with right off the bat, and she spoke to me as if I was a grown adult who could make the right decisions. She made me feel comfortable enough to pursue this new experience.

It’s a little difficult to remember everything we did in the hospital internship, but some things stood out. One of them was our trip to the cardiology department. We were shown the different rooms where different tests occurred, such as stress and echo tests. The echo tech career was quite interesting, seeing how the heart moves and pumps on the echocardiogram and the process and education to become one.

Before going into the internship, I had no career in mind other than being a physician assistant. Still, after that day, I always kept being an echo technician in mind. Another experience was our CPR certification day. Learning the proper way to give CPR and getting certified was an experience I don’t regret, and it made me proud of my choice of doing the Carver hospital internship.

My primary mentor during this experience was Mrs. Mitchell. As I mentioned, she made me more comfortable and confident in my choices. She also helped me throughout my college decision journey. She gave me insight into how the college I chose should support me in my career, like picking a school that had internship locations available on and off campus. She also helped me determine what school I’d feel more comfortable in based on the type of community.

Those who are considering joining Carver or YDP should do so. Carver gives you many opportunities that can look good on a college resume and give you so much knowledge on how you want to pursue your future career and goals.

I was also so blessed to have gotten a scholarship from Carver to help with my college tuition.

Participating in the Carver program has inspired me to want to provide teenagers with more internship possibilities and maybe even work. At some point in my career, I want to create my practice and have a department dedicated to teaching young adults about healthcare careers and giving them patient technician training.

The internship I completed gave me a broader perspective of healthcare and how many career opportunities there are in it. It ranges from surgery, where you could be hands deep in a person’s chest cavity, to providing the cleanliness of the hospital to protect the patients from germs and bacteria. This knowledge has helped me understand that healthcare is more than just understanding anatomy; it is about understanding your patients and the place of work.

This semester I had a class called World Religion in Healthcare and my new understanding of healthcare helped my writing in that class.

The biggest lesson I learned from my mentor, Mrs. Mitchell, was that I am my own person. The goals I have for myself don’t need to be approved by anyone but myself, and I shouldn’t let anyone interfere with the plans I have and want for my future.

Megan Lott Leads the Way in Spreading Holiday Cheer to Youth at the Carver Community Center

The holiday spirit is alive and well at the Carver Community Center, thanks to the efforts of Megan Lott, President of the Westport Garden Club and active member of the Westport Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL). Megan’s dedication to community service shines brightly this holiday season as both organizations come together to collect and donate gifts for Carver’s youth.

The Westport Garden Club, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024, collected gifts for children aged 18 months to 12 years. Founded in 1924, this historic organization has long been a cornerstone of community engagement in Westport, Connecticut, promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing the area's natural beauty. The club’s centennial year is a testament to its enduring commitment to service and its role in fostering a deep connection to nature in the local community.

Meanwhile, the Westport Chapter of the National Charity League, where Megan is also an active participant, gathered gifts specifically for teens, aligning with the age range of their Ticktocker members, who span grades 7 through 12. Founded in 2006, the Westport Chapter is part of the national NCL organization, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. Through its dedication to philanthropy and strengthening mother-daughter relationships, the NCL continues to impact Carver and communities across the country.

Both organizations brought their collective generosity to Carver’s doorstep, hosting spirited collection events and ensuring that children and teens in Norwalk will have a brighter holiday season. These gifts will be distributed at three special events at the Carver Community Center: the first on December 13 and the following on December 19, 20, and 21.

Megan Lott’s dual roles in leading the Westport Garden Club and contributing to the National Charity League exemplify the power of collaboration and community service. Her leadership, tireless efforts, and the support of both organizations are a wonderful reminder of how giving back can transform lives and strengthen the bonds within our communities.

The Carver Community Center is deeply grateful to Megan, the Westport Garden Club, and the Westport Chapter of the National Charity League for their heartfelt contributions. Together, they are making this holiday season one to remember for countless local youth and families.

Rowayton’s Generosity Shines Bright: Mike Barbis Santa Toy Drive Brings Holiday Cheer to Carver Kids

Joan and John DeRegt

The spirit of giving is alive and well in Rowayton, where the community’s kindness shines brightest during the holiday season. Yesterday, the Rowayton Fire Department and the Rowayton Civic Association (RCA) joined forces again to deliver joy and cheer to the Carver Community Center as part of the cherished Mike Barbis Santa Toy Drive.

These gifts will be gathered with many others to be given to our community’s children at three upcoming holiday events listed below.

This heartwarming tradition, co-founded by Joan DeRegt, is a testament to Rowayton's unwavering commitment to spreading love and happiness. For years, the Rowayton Fire Department and RCA have collaborated to collect toys, books, and gifts for Carver children, ensuring every child experiences the magic of the holiday season.

Joan and John DeRegt delivered these gifts yesterday, transforming the Carver Community Center into a holiday wonderland. The donated items, ranging from sporting equipment and books to toys and gift cards, symbolize the spirit of love and generosity that defines this community.

This annual Toy Drive was renamed to honor the late Mike Barbis, Rowayton’s former commissioner, co-founder with Joan, and devoted advocate for Carver. Among his many contributions, the Toy Drive held a special place in Mike’s heart, making this initiative even more meaningful.

A special thanks to RCA President Jen Capelo, whose generosity added sparkle to Carver’s festivities. Jen’s donation of a Christmas tree and decorations for Carver's Community Holiday Party this Friday will help create a magical ambiance for families to celebrate together.

The joy of giving knows no bounds, and Rowayton’s volunteers' dedication proves just that. From collecting mountains of gifts to delivering them with care, their selfless acts of kindness light up the holiday season for Carver families.

As we celebrate this festive time, let us extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone in Rowayton who contributed to this heartwarming initiative. The collective effort and generosity of the Rowayton community remind us of the timeless magic of the holiday season and the importance of giving.

May the spirit of giving continue to inspire us all, not just during the holidays but throughout the year. Thank you, Rowayton, for keeping the spirit of the season alive in the hearts of so many.
