From Hesitation to Inspiration: Gia's Journey Through Carver's Hospital Internship Program

When Gia Magana-Garcia first considered joining Carver’s high school paid internship program at Norwalk Hospital, she was unsure about stepping outside her comfort zone. Encouraged by her mentor, Carver’s Future Readiness Coordinator, Rayshonda Mitchell, Gia embraced the opportunity and discovered a new passion for healthcare. In her own words, Gia shares how this experience not only introduced her to exciting career possibilities but also gave her the confidence to pursue her goals and dream big.

Today, Gia is a University of South Florida – Tampa student studying to be a Physician Assistant. Here is Gia’s inspiring account of her Carver internship journey.

By Gia Magana-Garcia

I want to start by saying that Carver was one of the first programs that helped me explore outside my comfort zone. I’m the type of person who typically likes to keep things the same. Same people, same schedule, same environment.

When my friend, Mary Lupinacci, a student in the Carver program the previous year, told me about her experiences in the hospital internship and with Mrs. Rayshonda Mitchell, I was a little hesitant about pursuing it. I knew it would be an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge on possible future careers, but it would mean surrounding myself with different people and activities.

I met with Mrs. Mitchell to better understand the internship; she heavily influenced me. Mrs. Mitchell was a person I felt comfortable with right off the bat, and she spoke to me as if I was a grown adult who could make the right decisions. She made me feel comfortable enough to pursue this new experience.

It’s a little difficult to remember everything we did in the hospital internship, but some things stood out. One of them was our trip to the cardiology department. We were shown the different rooms where different tests occurred, such as stress and echo tests. The echo tech career was quite interesting, seeing how the heart moves and pumps on the echocardiogram and the process and education to become one.

Before going into the internship, I had no career in mind other than being a physician assistant. Still, after that day, I always kept being an echo technician in mind. Another experience was our CPR certification day. Learning the proper way to give CPR and getting certified was an experience I don’t regret, and it made me proud of my choice of doing the Carver hospital internship.

My primary mentor during this experience was Mrs. Mitchell. As I mentioned, she made me more comfortable and confident in my choices. She also helped me throughout my college decision journey. She gave me insight into how the college I chose should support me in my career, like picking a school that had internship locations available on and off campus. She also helped me determine what school I’d feel more comfortable in based on the type of community.

Those who are considering joining Carver or YDP should do so. Carver gives you many opportunities that can look good on a college resume and give you so much knowledge on how you want to pursue your future career and goals.

I was also so blessed to have gotten a scholarship from Carver to help with my college tuition.

Participating in the Carver program has inspired me to want to provide teenagers with more internship possibilities and maybe even work. At some point in my career, I want to create my practice and have a department dedicated to teaching young adults about healthcare careers and giving them patient technician training.

The internship I completed gave me a broader perspective of healthcare and how many career opportunities there are in it. It ranges from surgery, where you could be hands deep in a person’s chest cavity, to providing the cleanliness of the hospital to protect the patients from germs and bacteria. This knowledge has helped me understand that healthcare is more than just understanding anatomy; it is about understanding your patients and the place of work.

This semester I had a class called World Religion in Healthcare and my new understanding of healthcare helped my writing in that class.

The biggest lesson I learned from my mentor, Mrs. Mitchell, was that I am my own person. The goals I have for myself don’t need to be approved by anyone but myself, and I shouldn’t let anyone interfere with the plans I have and want for my future.

Megan Lott Leads the Way in Spreading Holiday Cheer to Youth at the Carver Community Center

The holiday spirit is alive and well at the Carver Community Center, thanks to the efforts of Megan Lott, President of the Westport Garden Club and active member of the Westport Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL). Megan’s dedication to community service shines brightly this holiday season as both organizations come together to collect and donate gifts for Carver’s youth.

The Westport Garden Club, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024, collected gifts for children aged 18 months to 12 years. Founded in 1924, this historic organization has long been a cornerstone of community engagement in Westport, Connecticut, promoting environmental stewardship and enhancing the area's natural beauty. The club’s centennial year is a testament to its enduring commitment to service and its role in fostering a deep connection to nature in the local community.

Meanwhile, the Westport Chapter of the National Charity League, where Megan is also an active participant, gathered gifts specifically for teens, aligning with the age range of their Ticktocker members, who span grades 7 through 12. Founded in 2006, the Westport Chapter is part of the national NCL organization, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. Through its dedication to philanthropy and strengthening mother-daughter relationships, the NCL continues to impact Carver and communities across the country.

Both organizations brought their collective generosity to Carver’s doorstep, hosting spirited collection events and ensuring that children and teens in Norwalk will have a brighter holiday season. These gifts will be distributed at three special events at the Carver Community Center: the first on December 13 and the following on December 19, 20, and 21.

Megan Lott’s dual roles in leading the Westport Garden Club and contributing to the National Charity League exemplify the power of collaboration and community service. Her leadership, tireless efforts, and the support of both organizations are a wonderful reminder of how giving back can transform lives and strengthen the bonds within our communities.

The Carver Community Center is deeply grateful to Megan, the Westport Garden Club, and the Westport Chapter of the National Charity League for their heartfelt contributions. Together, they are making this holiday season one to remember for countless local youth and families.

Rowayton’s Generosity Shines Bright: Mike Barbis Santa Toy Drive Brings Holiday Cheer to Carver Kids

Joan and John DeRegt

The spirit of giving is alive and well in Rowayton, where the community’s kindness shines brightest during the holiday season. Yesterday, the Rowayton Fire Department and the Rowayton Civic Association (RCA) joined forces again to deliver joy and cheer to the Carver Community Center as part of the cherished Mike Barbis Santa Toy Drive.

These gifts will be gathered with many others to be given to our community’s children at three upcoming holiday events listed below.

This heartwarming tradition, co-founded by Joan DeRegt, is a testament to Rowayton's unwavering commitment to spreading love and happiness. For years, the Rowayton Fire Department and RCA have collaborated to collect toys, books, and gifts for Carver children, ensuring every child experiences the magic of the holiday season.

Joan and John DeRegt delivered these gifts yesterday, transforming the Carver Community Center into a holiday wonderland. The donated items, ranging from sporting equipment and books to toys and gift cards, symbolize the spirit of love and generosity that defines this community.

This annual Toy Drive was renamed to honor the late Mike Barbis, Rowayton’s former commissioner, co-founder with Joan, and devoted advocate for Carver. Among his many contributions, the Toy Drive held a special place in Mike’s heart, making this initiative even more meaningful.

A special thanks to RCA President Jen Capelo, whose generosity added sparkle to Carver’s festivities. Jen’s donation of a Christmas tree and decorations for Carver's Community Holiday Party this Friday will help create a magical ambiance for families to celebrate together.

The joy of giving knows no bounds, and Rowayton’s volunteers' dedication proves just that. From collecting mountains of gifts to delivering them with care, their selfless acts of kindness light up the holiday season for Carver families.

As we celebrate this festive time, let us extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone in Rowayton who contributed to this heartwarming initiative. The collective effort and generosity of the Rowayton community remind us of the timeless magic of the holiday season and the importance of giving.

May the spirit of giving continue to inspire us all, not just during the holidays but throughout the year. Thank you, Rowayton, for keeping the spirit of the season alive in the hearts of so many.

Carver Awarded Four Prestigious 21st Century Grants to Empower Norwalk Students

Carver is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded four multi-year 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grants totaling $1,770,900 ($590,300 per year over three years), an extraordinary achievement that underscores our commitment to advancing educational opportunities.

These grants will fund Carver’s after-school programs at Kendall College and Career Academy, Brookside Elementary School, Tracey Magnet School, and Fox Run Elementary School.

Meet Joelle (Luciel) Balan: A Carver Intern Making a Difference at Jefferson Magnet School

At Carver, our students inspire us daily with their drive, passion, and commitment to making a positive impact. Today, we are proud to introduce Luciel, a senior at Brien McMahon High School and a member of the Class of 2025. Luciel's journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, dedication, and a love for learning.

With a keen interest in forensic science, Luciel has taken significant steps toward her dream career. From participating in the Norwalk Hospital internship program to serving as a paid Carver intern and tutor at Jefferson Magnet School, she is a role model for younger students and her peers.

In our interview, Luciel shares her experiences, aspirations, and what drives her to excel academically and personally. Read on to learn more about this remarkable young woman shaping her future while giving back to her community.

How did you first hear about Carver, and what made you decide to join?

I first heard about Carver through Ms. Mitchell in my junior year. I was in a medical club called HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), and the teacher advisor there talked about an internship opportunity at Norwalk Hospital for an Earn & Learn intern. I then went down to Ms. Mitchell, and she said I could do it if I were part of the YDP (the Youth Development Program). I thought the internship was a great opportunity to learn about the medical pathway and get in-person experience with the Norwalk Hospital, so I joined. I ended up staying because of the other opportunities and after-school help they provide.

What were your favorite activities or experiences with Carver, and why did they stand out to you?

My favorite experiences with Carver are meeting and becoming friends with new people. In the beginning, I wasn’t as dedicated to attending YDP because of other extracurriculars I had, or I just used the time to complete my homework alone with no help. When I started attending more often, I began to become familiar with some people in the program through the activities they offered. I’ve become good friends with them, and we group for activities in YDP. We would group for film, cooking, extra help, going outside, etc.

It stood out to me because they’ve helped encourage me to stay in YDP so I could experience all it had to offer. While some of YDP’s benefits were encouraging enough to have me stay, making friends there because of the group activities has made me feel comfortable attending YDP.

How has the mentoring you received helped you with school or personal goals?

The mentoring they provided helped me exceedingly academically. The tutors they provide are accelerated teachers in the subject (International Baccalaureate teachers), and they try to call down anyone or point us in the right direction to teachers who can help us. Two of the tutors there are my teachers (Math and English), so every time I have an issue in class, it’s straightforward to get help directly from the teacher. They offer a lot of support for my education and help me get the grades that I currently have.

What skills have you gained through your paid internships in the program, and how have they helped you in school or with future career plans?

The primary skill I’ve learned through the paid internship is career readiness, part of the hospital internship. They helped me create a LinkedIn account, resume, cover letter, and elevator pitch for the first time. These experiences helped me force my way out of my comfort zone and create my resume for jobs I’ve applied to. The preparation aspect helped me feel confident about getting a job at Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School because I'll be ready for any question they throw or ask.

How has participating in Carver programs influenced your confidence or your ability to tackle challenges?

The Carver programs, especially the Career Readiness program, have made me more confident in tackling challenges. Because they’ve prepared us for getting a job and what to provide, I feel confident that I have everything I could need to apply or at least most of it. When it comes to the challenge of talking about myself for jobs, they’ve also prepared me by having me make an elevator pitch with key points. The hands-on experience at Jefferson has helped me with challenges, too, because it’s a new environment in which I gain experience. This will significantly help me in the medical field if I ever work with children.

Is there a lesson or advice you received from a mentor that has stayed with you?

A piece of advice that I’ve received from Ms. Mitchell that has stayed with me is to ‘strive for more.’ I’ve always been uncertain and unconfident about my abilities and education, but Ms. Mitchell sees so much in my capabilities. She repeatedly reminds me to strive for more, to reach for more because I’m capable of doing so. She tells me how much I’ve accomplished and reminds me of my level of education. She helps me see that I’m much more than I think. That piece of advice, ‘Strive for More,’ has helped me be more confident in my work.

In what ways has the program helped you feel more prepared for college or your future career?

The internships, Career Readiness, and working opportunities have made me feel more prepared for college and my future career. YDP has helped me understand what I do and don’t want to become in the future, and Ms. Mitchell has offered me support every step of the way. My experience in YDP has helped me expose myself to things that I wouldn’t have done before, like getting a bank account or making a LinkedIn account. They’ve exposed me to things that are more than just grades on my transcript. They’ve helped me build my resume and go after opportunities. While I wasn’t part of it because I wanted to stay near the area for college, YDP offers excellent tours to different colleges in different states that can be free or cost very little money. You get to experience life in other states, take tours, and do sightseeing in person. While I didn’t do it because of my choices for college, it was and can be very helpful to those who want to go to college somewhere far away.

What would you say to other students who are considering joining Carver/Sr. YDP?

I would say it’s an excellent opportunity to join, regardless of the money you have to pay to be in the program. I’ve already earned the money back because of the paid internships and working at Jefferson Elementary, so I don’t have to worry about losing money. I would also encourage them to participate in the opportunities they provide. I’ve also gained so much experience with the world outside of school because of the guidance the staff offers. It’s completely worth it to join; it has completely transformed my high school experience.

How would you like to give back to your community someday, and has Carver inspired those goals?

Someday, I’d like to give back money to help my community. For the college trips, we earn money through fundraisers and standing outside establishments with signs to help fund the trip. Through the opportunities I’ve had at Carver, I've realized how important it is for some people to get money. It could help them gain golden opportunities or experiences that could change their lives in school or out of school.

What would you like Carver donors to know about how their support has impacted your life?

I’d like them to know that I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have without Carver. Their Career Readiness has helped me the most for my future. I would have never made resumes, cover letters, elevator pitches, or a LinkedIn profile because I would have never had someone guide me through or tell me to make those or that I should make them. I wasn’t aware of how vital an elevator pitch or LinkedIn account is. I would have never gotten in-person experience at the hospital or made many connections with people from whom I would most likely need help soon or in the future.

The job I got through Carver helped me immensely to know how to interact with children and what having a job is like. I never thought I’d like to work with kids before, but now, I’m excited to go to work every time because of Carver.

The money the job has given me has taught me to manage money and spend it wisely. People may always say to spend money wisely, but it’s different when you have cash in your bank account. With the job, I’ve also learned to manage my time. I’ve always had minimal extracurriculars, but with work now, I’ve learned to manage my time properly.

I would also never have realized that I have more dreams and aspirations than I used to have. Because they’ve encouraged me to think about college more and what I want to be in the future, I’ve realized that I wish to do even more than just the medical field. I learned to branch out from my dreams since I was young and make new ones that I can strive for.

I want Carver donors to know I’m grateful for every opportunity and experience they’ve helped provide.
