The First Wave of Carver Campers Depart to The Ecology School in Saco, Maine

Carver campers with their parents

The Carver Community Center buzzed with excitement today as the first wave of campers boarded the bus bound for The Ecology School in Saco, Maine.

We thank The Grossman Family Foundation for their generous and inspired support in making this transformative multi-year experience possible.

This marks a significant milestone in our summer program as our rising 7th and 8th graders embark on their journey for the second and third time to this unique and transformative educational experience for the second and third time.

Having experienced the wonders of their beloved The Ecology School since they, too, were rising 6th graders, they eagerly anticipate a deeper exploration of the natural world. The school's hands-on approach to learning, which engages all five senses, allows students to discover the intricacies of nature in a truly immersive way. From the taste of freshly picked herbs to the feel of soil between their fingers, every moment at The Ecology School is designed to foster a profound connection with the environment.

A Look Back and Ahead

Rising 8th graders learn something new each time they go. They explore the forest and river ecosystems and learn more about the coastal areas. They can't wait to see what new adventures await them!

Previous experiences have instilled a sense of responsibility and curiosity about the natural world. They are prepared to mentor the new 6th graders, who will make their first trip to The Ecology School tomorrow.

Preparing for a Week of Discovery

As they arrive at The Ecology School, our campers will dive into a week packed with hands-on activities, from studying marine life on the coast to understanding sustainable farming practices. The program emphasizes experiential learning, encouraging students to ask questions, explore their surroundings, and engage with their environment in ways that traditional classroom settings often cannot provide.

Carver CEO Novelette Peterkin, who visits with the students at the school each summer, said, “We are thrilled to see our students return to The Ecology School. Their enthusiasm for environmental learning is truly inspiring. This experience enhances their knowledge and nurtures a lifelong respect and passion for nature.”

Looking Forward to the Next Departure

Meanwhile, the rising 6th graders eagerly count the hours until their adventure begins. Set to depart on Sunday, these first-time visitors are ready to enter a new world of exploration and discovery. The anticipation is palpable as they prepare for their inaugural experience at The Ecology School, where they will join the returning students in embracing the beauty and complexity of our natural environment.

A Journey of Growth and Learning

This journey is more than just a field trip; it is a step toward personal growth and a deeper understanding of our planet. We are incredibly proud of our students and excited to see how their experiences at The Ecology School will shape their perspectives and inspire their futures.

Read here about this special Carver summer initiative for Norwalk middle school students to experience a traditional New England sleepaway camp in Maine. They explore the woods, waters, and fields of The Ecology School at the River Bend Farm, a historic 105-acre farm located on a scenic bend in the Saco River, just twenty minutes from the Maine coast.

Stay tuned for updates and stories from our campers as they explore, learn, and grow at The Ecology School!
