Connecticut’s Office of Early Childhood (OEC) was established in 2013 to coordinate and improve the various early childhood programs and components in the state to create a cohesive high-quality early childhood system. The OEC Division of Licensing oversees licensing programs for child care centers, group child care homes, family child care homes, and youth camps. OEC is committed to promoting the health, safety, and welfare of Connecticut’s children.
And they only make unannounced inspections!
Last week OEC inspected our Summer Enrichment Program at Columbus Magnet School and this week OEC inspected our summer program at the Carver Community Center, each camp caring for more than 200 kids — and OEC found ZERO infractions.
OEC’s countless licensing rules and standards cover everything from qualified staff being responsible for administering first aid to keeping all medical and program logs and child records complete and up-to-date. Certificates are required to assure that all required fire and food safety measures are taken and that even the camp vehicles are safe to carry children. Written policies and procedures need to be up-to-date and followed by all camp staff. The list of requirements go on and achieving a perfect score at both camps requires the constant training and vigilance of all staff, from camp counselors to supervisors and Carver administrators.
