N.B.A. players have pledged to resume the season after their walkout ahead of playoff games to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake triggered a far-reaching work stoppage that stretched across professional basketball, baseball, tennis and soccer.

The athletes’ protests began with a walkout by Milwaukee Bucks players, leading the N.B.A. to postpone all the playoff games scheduled for last Wednesday. Later, the league also postponed three playoff games scheduled for Thursday.

Former President Barack Obama on Wednesday praised the Milwaukee Bucks for "standing up for what they believe in" following the team's decision. "I commend the players on the @Bucks for standing up for what they believe in, coaches like @DocRivers, and the @NBA and @WNBA for setting an example," Obama tweeted. "It's going to take all our institutions to stand up for our values."
