Alexandra Estrella, Ed. D, has been chosen to be Norwalk’s next Superintendent of Schools.

“Dr. Estrella, a first-generation Latina-American, is a visionary, innovative, forward-thinking leader that does not accept the status quo regarding scholar development and learning opportunities,” the Board of Education said in a statement. “An educator with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Estrella has spent the last seven years in the role of superintendent for Community School District Four in East Harlem, New York.”

…Dr. Estrella and her husband have three children, fourteen-year-old twin sons and an eighteen-year-old daughter. Their twins will start high school at Norwalk Public Schools in August 2020 and their daughter will enter her first year of college.”

McKinsey Report: Protecting Black America from COVID-19

McKinsey analysis shows that black Americans are almost twice as likely to live in the counties at highest risk of health and economic disruption, if or when the pandemic hits those counties. To assess disruption, we evaluated five indicators: underlying health conditions, poverty rate, number of hospital beds, percentage of people in severe housing conditions, and population density. This integrated health and economic perspective describes which counties are likely to take a “one-two punch” due to the pandemic and could get trapped in a vicious cycle of economic instability and poor health.

Flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of those who have lost their lives or have been affected by COVID-19

Governor Ned Lamont announced that he is directing U.S. and State of Connecticut flags to be lowered to half-staff statewide effective immediately in recognition and mourning of all those who have lost their lives and been affected by COVID-19. The flags will remain lowered throughout the emergency. Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise – should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

Maritime Aquarium is offering wonderful online courses for students of all ages

The Maritime Aquarium is an important and long time Carver partner, offering crucial hands-on STEM programs to our students after school and during the summers. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, they are still filtering millions of gallons of water, feeding and caring for their many thousands of animals, and even now providing online conservation and science education to students. They are providing each organism with environmental conditions that replicate those in its natural environment. The husbandry staff is just as concerned now as they ever were with factors such as water treatment, salts, dissolved oxygen, temperature and light.
