Summer is a time for relaxation, but for the group of enthusiastic rising 6th graders at West Rocks Middle School, it is also a time for learning, exploring, and having a blast at Carver's Summer Transition Program.
Managed by Carver Lead Program Coordinator Michael Richards, the Grade 6 Social Studies Teacher and Social Studies Subject Area Leader at West Rocks Middle School, this program aims to prepare students for their upcoming middle school journey while providing unforgettable summer experiences. Let's dive into some of the exciting activities during this summer program!
The photos show engaging STEM activities that left the students buzzing with excitement. Divided into groups, the kids were challenged to build the tallest free-standing tower using nothing but spaghetti and marshmallows. Armed with creativity and teamwork, the students put their problem-solving skills to the test and constructed impressive structures. It was amazing to see how their towers reached new heights, and the smiles on their faces reflected their sense of accomplishment.
But the fun didn't stop there! Another highlight of the program was the special visit from Hank, Jen Duran's therapy dog. With his friendly wagging tail and comforting presence, Hank brought joy and calmness to the students. The bond between the children and Hank was evident as they spent quality time together, the kids reading to Hank and enjoying the simple pleasure of petting a furry friend. It was a heartwarming experience that created a positive and nurturing environment for the students.
Creativity took center stage when the students worked in groups to perform an impressive dance performance. Guided by Kendon McClain, one of the program's paraprofessionals and a formally trained dancer, the students learned various dance moves and choreographed routines. Their hard work paid off as they showcased their talents in an energetic and synchronized dance performance. It was an excellent opportunity for the students to express themselves and build self-confidence, all while fostering teamwork and collaboration.
In addition to the captivating STEM and dance activities, the students were treated to a mind-blowing visit from Mad Science. The Mad Science team brought the world of chemistry and electricity to life through hands-on experiments and demonstrations. The students eagerly volunteered and witnessed mesmerizing chemical reactions and awe-inspiring displays of electricity. From creating colorful eruptions to generating static electricity, their curiosity and enthusiasm were ignited, leaving them with a newfound appreciation for the wonders of science.
