Carver Community Commemorates Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Legacy

Since our founding in 1938, even our namesake, George Washington Carver, witnessed the early observances of this momentous occasion. Our community has embraced and honored Juneteenth with pride and purpose ever since.

A Historical Reflection

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, marks the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation. This pivotal moment came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s decree, symbolizing the final liberation of enslaved African Americans in the Confederate states. However, it was not until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December 1865 that slavery was abolished nationwide.

The journey of Juneteenth from its roots in Texas to becoming a nationwide celebration each year on or around June 19 reflects the resilience and determination of African Americans. Initially centered around church gatherings and community events in Texas, the tradition spread throughout the South and eventually across the nation, thanks to the Great Migration (here is an exhibit showing The Carver’s role in this happening). By the late 20th century, Juneteenth had evolved into a vibrant celebration of African-American culture, freedom, and arts.

Carver's Legacy and Commitment

For The Carver community, Juneteenth has always been more than a date on the calendar; it's a day to reflect on our shared history, celebrate our cultural heritage, and renew our commitment to progress and unity. George Washington Carver dedicated his life to scientific discovery and agricultural innovation, profoundly impacting African-American empowerment. His vision for a community grounded in education, sustainability, and equality continues to inspire us today.

Our observance of Juneteenth began as intimate gatherings, with storytelling, music, and reflections on our collective journey. Over the decades, these celebrations have grown, sometimes evolving into community-wide events that bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. Each year, we honor Carver's legacy by educating the younger generation about the significance of Juneteenth, promoting cultural awareness, and fostering a spirit of inclusivity.

Juneteenth 2024: Celebration Highlights

This year, Juneteenth celebrations across the country have and will blend tradition and modernity, embodying the spirit of unity and reflection. As shown in the image below, Norwalk’s 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 15, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., on the historic Norwalk Green, was a celebration of art, music, culture, and food, including a DJ, live music and dance, activities for children, and more, sponsored by the First Taxing District and the Norwalk Branch NAACP.

We always reflect on the sacrifices and achievements of those who fought for freedom. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for social justice and equality in our community and beyond.

Looking Ahead

As we commemorate Juneteenth 2024, we are reminded of our progress and the work that still lies ahead. Our celebration serves as a beacon of hope, resilience, and unity, reflecting the values George Washington Carver championed throughout his life. At Carver, we stand united in our dedication to honoring the past, embracing the present, and shaping a future rooted in equality and justice.

Join Us in Celebrating Juneteenth!

We invite everyone to join us in our ongoing celebration of Juneteenth and our collective journey toward a more inclusive and equitable society. Together, we can honor our history, celebrate our heritage, and build a brighter future for future generations.

Make Your Voice Heard: Advocate for Afterschool and Summer Learning Programs Today!

Today is "Reaching out to your Member of Congress" day, sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance. This is a critical opportunity to voice the importance of after-school and summer learning programs for our community. These programs play a pivotal role in providing our students with a robust learning environment, empowering them to realize their full potential, and offering the support they need to thrive academically and personally. #AfterschoolWorks

In today's fast-paced and ever-changing world, our young people require a holistic approach to education beyond the traditional classroom setting. Afterschool and summer learning programs bridge this gap by offering enrichment activities, academic support, and a safe space for children to explore their interests and develop new skills. These programs also provide essential services for working families, ensuring their children are cared for and engaged in meaningful activities when school is out.

The impact is profound when after-school and summer programs collaborate with schools and community partners, as with Carver’s 60+ programs. Such partnerships create a seamless support system for young people, addressing their diverse needs and fostering an environment where every child can succeed. Whether through arts and sports, STEM activities, or tutoring and mentoring, these programs contribute to the comprehensive development of our children.

As Congress deliberates on priorities for the next fiscal year, it's crucial to highlight the transformative impact of afterschool and summer learning programs on our community. Share your stories, experiences, and the tangible benefits these programs have brought your young people and families. Your voice can make a difference in ensuring these programs receive the funding and support they need to continue their vital work.

Together, we can ensure that every child has access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. Let's make our voices heard and advocate for a future where all children are cared for, educated, and inspired.

You can use these easy online tools to contact your Member of Congress today and help secure the support our afterschool and summer learning programs deserve.

Celebrating Success and The Power of Asking for Help

Last Friday night, over 100 people gathered at The Carver Community Center to honor the academic accomplishments of our students and to award scholarships to graduating seniors and those currently in college. The event was a celebration of hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support that The Carver provides to its students.

The evening began with an inspiring keynote address delivered by The Carver alumnae, Kim and Taylor Duhart, sisters who spoke passionately about the importance of asking for help and never giving up.

“We need to be putting ourselves into situations to ask for support and never be afraid to ask for that support,” Kim emphasized. Taylor shared her personal experiences, highlighting the challenges she faced while pursuing her dreams and the critical role that seeking support played in her journey. “We have to learn how to fail, learn how to overcome, because it's all part of educating ourselves to be better human beings. I am here today because I was able to ask for help and not give up, and honestly if it wasn't for The Carver and the people back here at home, asking for their help and guidance, them pushing me on, I really appreciate that. This is why it's important to make connections, why it's important to persevere, and to ask for help in order to grow.

The journey to success is rarely a solo endeavor. It often involves the support and encouragement of others. The Carver recognizes this, and it is through these programs and awards that we show up for these young people each and every day. With great thanks to a passionate group of donors, The Carver was able to award over $150,000 in scholarships this year.

The event was a testament to the power of community, perseverance, and the willingness to seek and offer help. The scholarships awarded are more than just financial aids; they are symbols of belief in the potential of each student. They represent the collective effort of a community committed to fostering growth, resilience, and excellence.

Congratulations to all our students for a remarkable school year. Your achievements are a testament to your hard work.

Empowering Future Innovators: Dr. Barnett’s Partnership with Technovation Girls Transforms Carver Students’ Lives

CMS girls won first place!

This past Saturday marked a transformative event for Carver students, thanks to the incredible efforts of Dr. Barnett, a dedicated Technovation Girls Ambassador. Dr. Barnett, through her organization Amazing Girls Science, collaborated with Technovation Girls to create an unforgettable experience that left a lasting impact on the young participants and their community.

Dr. Barnett’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. Her outstanding work was highlighted in CBS TV's "Fulfilling the Dream" program, which aired during a Martin Luther King celebration. Furthermore, she has been honored by the Connecticut Technology Council with the Community Innovation & Leadership Award and received the inaugural AARP Purpose Prize for her exceptional efforts in promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education among girls.

As a Technovation Girls ambassador, Dr. Barnett secured funding to enhance the celebration with t-shirts, signage, and a professional photographer, ensuring the day was as memorable as possible. The Richard Whitcomb Gymnasium at The Carver Community Center was abuzz with excitement as teams from Norwalk’s elementary schools presented their innovative projects to a panel of judges.

The STEAM competition saw three official judges evaluating the projects. Concord Magnet School's team clinched First Place and a $100 prize with their cutting-edge app that showcased remarkable creativity and technical skills. Second Place and $50 went to the Fox Run Elementary School “Sunshine Girls.” The Third Place was a tie, with Kendal College and Career Academy and Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School both winning $25 for their innovative solutions.

Parents beamed with pride as they captured moments of their daughters presenting their apps, celebrating the culmination of weeks of hard work. These young technologists dedicated over 40 hours to their projects over at least 12 weeks, following a detailed curriculum that honed their technological, collaborative, problem-solving, and leadership skills. The experience was transformative not only for the girls but also for the adult volunteers who mentored and guided them, finding the journey equally enriching and gaining new perspectives.

Technovation Girls is more than a competition; it’s a global movement that has empowered 150,000 young women over the past 15 years to become technology entrepreneurs and community leaders. Many alumni, long after participating, credit the program for shaping their career paths and professional interests. Local Chapters and Clubs, led by experienced Technovation alumnae, play a crucial role in providing a supportive environment for these young innovators, fostering collaboration, and ensuring they have the resources to succeed.

The Carver Community Center is excited to continue its partnership with Technovation Girls, inspiring more young women to harness the power of technology for positive change. As these girls look to the future, they do so with confidence and the skills to build a better world, one innovative solution at a time. Together, we are shaping the next generation of leaders and innovators.
