Inspiring Journeys at Carver's Breakfast With Champions

Last Saturday morning, the Carver Community Center was abuzz with energy as the annual Breakfast With Champions event brought together aspiring young minds and accomplished professionals across Connecticut. Organized by the dedicated efforts of Ms. Roberson and Tremain Gilmore, among Carver's longest-serving and most beloved staff, the event aimed to inspire and guide the youth toward paths of success.

Here are descriptions of the Breakfast With Champions event in 2022 and 2023.

The event's centerpiece each year is a panel of ten adult professionals, some of whom are Carver alumni, who share their life stories and the challenges they overcame to achieve their dreams. They speak candidly about their mistakes along the way, offering valuable lessons to the audience of approximately 200 youth and family members.

As each speaker took the microphone for their ten-minute presentation last Saturday, a profound silence fell over the room, broken only by the occasional scribbling of notes or murmurs of understanding. Their tales were not just of triumphs but also of resilience, perseverance, and the power of learning from missteps.

Throughout the event, a sense of hope and possibility permeated the air as the youth in attendance eagerly absorbed the wisdom and experiences shared by the panelists. During the question-and-answer sessions, hands shot up, eager minds seeking guidance on navigating the challenges ahead.

As the event drew to a close and the aroma of a hot breakfast wafted through the room, the atmosphere was one of profound gratitude and inspiration. The Breakfast With Champions had once again proven to be a powerful catalyst, igniting the dreams and aspirations of Carver's youth and reminding them that success is within reach, no matter the obstacles that may stand in their way.

Families and Students Get Creative with Pizza Making at Side By Side Charter School

At Side By Side Charter School, education isn't just about what happens within the four walls of the classroom—it's about building a community where families, teachers, and students come together to learn, grow, and have fun.

Recently, Carver’s after-school program at Side By Side hosted a unique Parent Engagement Initiative that brought families into the school to bond over a beloved activity: making pizzas!

Nestled in the heart of downtown South Norwalk, Side By Side Charter School has been a beacon of innovative education since its founding in 1997. With its independent status, the school can explore creative approaches to learning and foster a sense of belonging among its 235 students, who represent diverse towns and cities across Connecticut.

Carver has provided after-school and summer programs for Side by Side students for many years. The after-school Parent Engagement Initiative is just one example of Side By Side's commitment to involving parents in their children's education journey. This event allowed families to spend quality time together, connect with the school community, and get a firsthand look at their children's learning environment.

During the pizza-making event, parents rolled their sleeves alongside students, kneading dough, spreading sauce, and adding their favorite toppings. Laughter filled the air as families worked together to create delicious masterpieces. For many parents, it was a chance to see their children in action, showcasing their culinary skills and teamwork abilities.

The initiative also served as a platform for meaningful conversations between parents, teachers, and school staff. As pizzas were baked in the oven, families gathered around tables, exchanging stories, sharing experiences, and brainstorming ideas to enrich the school community further.

At Side By Side, education extends beyond academics—it's about nurturing a sense of belonging and fostering lifelong relationships. By actively involving parents in school activities like the pizza-making event, Side By Side upholds its mission of creating a vibrant learning environment where joy and passion for learning thrive.

As the aroma of freshly baked pizzas filled the hallways of Side By Side Charter School, families were brought closer together and strengthened their bonds that make Side By Side an extraordinary place to learn and grow.

Norwalk PAL Visits Carver Community Center to Inspire Young Minds Through Chess

In a heartwarming collaboration to nurture young minds, the Norwalk Police Activities League (PAL) recently visited the Carver Community Center. The occasion? Spirited chess games in the Richard Whitcomb Gymnasium, where officers from PAL engaged with eager students from Carver in a friendly match of wits and strategy.

Norwalk PAL, a nonprofit organization committed to providing positive alternatives for the youth of Norwalk, understands the pivotal role of mentorship and engagement in steering young individuals away from potential pitfalls. Led by a dedicated team of officers, including Deputy Chief (Ret.) Susan Zecca is the president, Juan Flores is the vice president, Chief (Ret.) Thomas Kulhawik is the Treasurer, and Maria Paul is the Secretary; the league actively seeks to foster a supportive environment where youngsters can thrive.

Chess, often hailed as the "game of kings," transcends mere entertainment. It is a powerful tool for cognitive development, teaching valuable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and patience. More than just moving pieces on a board, chess requires players to anticipate their opponent's moves, plan, and adapt strategies on the fly – skills that are invaluable both on and off the chessboard.

However, the benefits of teaching chess to youth extend far beyond academic or strategic prowess. Through the game, children learn the importance of perseverance and resilience in facing challenges. Whether triumphant or thwarted, every move becomes a lesson in resilience, teaching young minds to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth.

Moreover, chess fosters a sense of community and camaraderie. Regardless of background or skill level, players unite over a shared love for the game, building friendships that transcend social barriers. In the case of Norwalk PAL's visit to Carver, the interaction between officers and students bridges the gap between law enforcement and the community, fostering trust and understanding in a relaxed, informal setting.

By engaging with youth through activities like chess, Norwalk PAL exemplifies its commitment to providing holistic support and guidance to young individuals. Through cultural, educational, and athletic experiences, the league empowers youth with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges successfully.

The Norwalk PAL's visit to Carver Community Center highlights the transformative power of mentorship and engagement. Officers and students come together through the timeless game of chess to learn, grow, and forge meaningful connections that transcend boundaries. In a world fraught with uncertainty, initiatives like these serve as beacons of hope, lighting the path toward a brighter future for all.
