Carver NHS Students Tour the Capitol with Rep. Kadeem Roberts

Last Friday, Carver students from Norwalk High School took a trip to Hartford to tour the Connecticut State Capitol with State Rep. Kadeem Roberts. Representative Roberts, an NHS and Carver alumnus, represents Connecticut's 137th Assembly district in Norwalk, is an assistant majority leader, and is a member of the Committee on Children, the Education Committee, and the Housing Committee. For our students, it was inspiring to be toured through the state capital by a politician who previously walked the halls of their school.

Many Carver students hold an interest in government. Modern campaigning and policy making is ever evolving, and our civically-minded students want to know: what does it take to run for office? What does a day in the life of a state rep look like? How do we take care of the community that takes care of us? Rep. Roberts was the perfect guide. As a lifelong Norwalker, he works every day to maintain Norwalk as a great city in which to raise a family, to receive an excellent education, to have access to quality healthcare, and to secure affordable housing.

This tour of the State Capitol with Rep. Roberts is just one of the many field trips Carver students embark on during their K-12 educational career. From college tours to symphony visits to team building at adventure parks, Carver programming is designed to put students in the environments that prompt growth and confidence. If the words of Marian Wright Edelman hold true: “you can’t be what you can’t see.” As we build lifetime achievers, we endeavor for Carver kids to see it all and achieve it all. Thank you to Rep. On Advocacy and Our Namesake, George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver, a prominent African-American scientist and educator in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, demonstrated remarkable grace and resilience in the face of racial injustice during his lifetime. Despite living in a deeply segregated and racially discriminatory era, Carver remained committed to his work and principles, advocating for positive change through peaceful means. This is the legacy that we embody here today in the Carver community.

His dedication to education and empowerment characterized Carver's approach to addressing racial injustice. He believed that knowledge and self-improvement were critical to dismantling racial barriers. He focused on providing educational opportunities to African-American students and farmers, emphasizing the importance of education as a tool for progress.

Throughout his career, Carver's work at the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) emphasized practical skills and sustainable farming techniques. He sought to uplift Black communities in the South by teaching them to cultivate their land effectively, fostering economic independence, and reducing dependence on the discriminatory sharecropping system.

Carver's commitment to peaceful change also extended to his interactions with others. He advocated for racial harmony and understanding, believing that racial tensions could be mitigated through dialogue and cooperation. He actively engaged with both Black and white communities, demonstrating the power of collaboration to overcome prejudice.

In essence, George Washington Carver's peaceful approach to addressing racial injustice, as our approach is today, was rooted in education, economic empowerment, and a belief in the potential for positive change through dialogue and cooperation. His legacy inspires all of us to work towards a more just and equitable society.

Celebrating Cultural Richness: National Hispanic Heritage Month in the Carver Community

Every year, from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. This month-long celebration pays tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. It's a time to honor the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, whose heritage is rooted in all Latin American countries. This month holds special significance in the Carver community as we appreciate the vibrant diversity of Norwalk.

The Carver community is where the spirit of unity and celebration thrives, making National Hispanic Heritage Month a significant occasion. Carver is home to a diverse array of students, including many with roots in various Latin American countries, and this month offers a unique opportunity to showcase their heritage and foster a deeper understanding of their culture.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than just celebrating a specific heritage; it's about building bridges and fostering inclusivity. This month, we learn from each other and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our community. As National Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds in the Carver community, it is a time when the rich Hispanic and Latino heritage is celebrated and shared, creating a stronger sense of unity and understanding. In embracing diversity, the Carver community exemplifies the true spirit of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

June Qin Organizes Benefit Concert for Carver Art Enrichment!

For many students, summer means vacations, beaches, sleeping-in, and taking a much needed break. But for others, summer becomes an opportunity to put energy into personal passions and community service. This is the case for June Qin, Darien High School student and Arts Program Director of BeHASSTic, who decided to leverage her passion for music and philanthropy to put on a concert benefitting Carver kids.

June has pursued the arts from a young age. A pianist since 6 years old, her accomplishments include performing at both Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York. She is also a formal visual artist. But June was not satisfied in saving her passions for personal acclaim—instead she joined BeHASSTic, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to filling the gaps in traditional educational programs. She became the organization’s Arts Program Director and has since encouraged a love for the arts in our community’s children.

We were so happy to have welcomed June and her BeHASSTic colleagues to our community in 2021 when BeHASSTic partnered with the Carver. This year, however, June graduated from volunteer to Carver fundraiser! When she heard that the Carver planned to bring further art enrichment to elementary and middle school students, she offered to join the development effort. Over several months, June planned and brought to bear a benefit concert and art sale to help the Carver bring students to classes at the Norwalk Art Space.

We are deeply grateful for June’s verve for art and consideration for our students. The giving she inspired allows our students the opportunity to pursue various classes led by local artists at NAS. From Painting 101 to the impact of “ARTIVISM”, Norwalk Art Space classes provides students the means to express themselves skillfully and powerfully. Not only do Carver kids hone their creative instincts, but they learn how to make decisions with confidence. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement than children who do not participate. Arts-educated children learn to use their voice in public forums, from spelling bees to science fairs to stage debates.

At the Carver, the arts are indispensable to building lifetime achievers. We are so grateful to receive June’s support in realizing our mission. And we thank all of those who contributed to June’s fundraiser and were moved by her work.

Carver in the News: Carver Partners with Norwalk Public Schools and CT State Norwalk to Empower High Schoolers with Dual Enrollment Opportunities

In a significant development for the students of Norwalk, NPS secured a remarkable achievement. Thanks to the generous support of the Connecticut Dual Credit Expansion Grant program, NPS has been granted $90,000 to introduce and bolster dual enrollment courses within its public high schools. These grant funds, originating from the American Rescue Plan Act, are poised to be a game-changer for many of the city's high school students, offering them a unique opportunity to earn college credit while still attending high school. This exciting partnership is set to redefine educational horizons for Norwalk's youth.

The potential impact of this initiative cannot be overstated; it's an opportunity for students to excel academically and significantly reduce the financial burden of pursuing higher education.

The grant allocation will play a pivotal role in enhancing the existing dual enrollment courses, making them more accessible and enriching for students. Furthermore, a mentorship program with The Carver is in the pipeline. This program aims to provide students with valuable guidance and resources as they navigate the dual enrollment experience, ensuring their success.

Norwalk Public Schools is also committed to supporting its high school teachers. After surveying to gauge interest, the district intends to use a portion of the grant to facilitate high school teachers in becoming adjunct professors in their respective subject areas. This is an opportunity for professional growth and a means to enhance the quality of dual enrollment courses further.

So, what dual enrollment opportunities can Norwalk students look forward to? The district is considering offering English 101 and U.S. History I through NCC, now known as CT State Norwalk, at the Center for Global Studies, Brien McMahon High School, and Norwalk High School. These courses will give students a solid foundation in crucial subjects while earning them college credits.

Moreover, Norwalk Public Schools is exploring possibly introducing Amazon Web Services Cloud Foundations and Google IT certifications through CT State Norwalk. This addition to the curriculum is fascinating as it aligns with the evolving demands of the job market, offering students a practical edge in their future careers.

The partnership between Carver, Norwalk Public Schools, and CT State Norwalk marks a significant step forward in educational innovation. With this grant funding, the district is poised to empower its high school students by providing them with dual enrollment opportunities that can set them on a path to success in college and beyond. The commitment to teacher development further underscores the dedication of Norwalk Public Schools to ensuring the highest quality of education for its students. Carver’s 9th Annual Golf Classic: A Day of Fellowship, Fun, and Fundraising

The forecasted rainy weather teased us with dramatically towering cumulus clouds. Still, on Monday, September 11th, Carver’s golfing enthusiasts enjoyed a sun-soaked day of camaraderie and competition at the 9th Annual Golf Classic.

Hosted at the picturesque Shorehaven Golf Club, this event was a memorable day filled with sumptuous meals, thrilling contests, and heartwarming moments.

The day kicked off with golfers taking to the greens under the expert guidance of the Shorehaven Golf Club's pros. The golfers were in for a treat as they navigated the lush fairways and challenging holes, all while basking in the sun's warm glow. The beauty of the golf course, with its rolling hills and pristine greens along the Long Island Sound coastline, set the stage for an excellent day for all.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the golfers gathered for an evening program filled with excitement and anticipation. The reception brought together old friends and new acquaintances, fostering community at the heart of Carver's mission.

The silent auction, a highlight of the evening, featured various items generously donated by local businesses and supporters. These contributions helped raise additional funds to support Carver's mission of providing quality education and opportunities to its students.

Of course, no golf event would be complete without recognizing and rewarding the winners. Prizes were awarded to the golfers who demonstrated exceptional skill and sportsmanship throughout the day. Their achievements were a testament to the dedication and passion of all who participated.

At dinner, gratitude filled the air as attendees reflected on the success of the 9th Annual Golf Classic. The event would not have been possible without the leadership and generosity of the Golf Classic Committee, whose tireless efforts ensured this day was a resounding success. It showcased the profound impact education and fellowship can have on individuals and their communities. Cranbury Elementary School, the New Ideal Learning Environment for Your Child

The landscape of education is ever-evolving, and the newly inaugurated Cranbury Elementary School, where Carver conducts before- and after-school programs, stands as a testament to the innovative strides in creating optimal learning environments for young minds. This school doesn't just offer education – it offers an experience that nurtures, engages, and uplifts every student.

As you step through the main entrance of Cranbury Elementary School, you're immediately greeted by a sight that sets the tone for the entire establishment. An expansive open foyer welcomes students, teachers, parents, and visitors, with geometric-tiled flooring and cedar-decked ceilings soaring 20 feet high. The design tells a story of ambition, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.

The heart of any school is its cafeteria, and Cranbury Elementary School is no exception. Adorned with green and blue sound-absorbing panels, the cafeteria offers a serene ambiance for students to enjoy their meals and engage in social interactions. The south wall is a virtual gallery of the surrounding greenery, with windows stretching from floor to ceiling, bathing the space in natural light.

Adjacent to the cafeteria is a gymnasium that goes beyond the ordinary. Equipped with basketball hoops, a stage platform, and even a climbing wall, this gymnasium is a space for both physical activity and artistic expression. What sets our gym apart is its separation from the cafeteria. This is a rarity in elementary schools and helps create a more focused environment for physical activities.

Beyond the school's aesthetic marvels, the impact on the students truly stands out. The architecture and design contribute to a remarkably calm atmosphere. Acoustic panels ensure a peaceful auditory experience, enabling better concentration and learning.

The school's thoughtful layout extends to the classrooms as well. With large outward-facing windows in each classroom, natural light floods the spaces, creating a bright and conducive atmosphere for learning.

Each classroom has a ViewSonic ViewBoard at its center, enhancing interactive teaching methods. Moreover, incorporating a sound system with an audio jack in each classroom enhances accessibility, ensuring every student can engage with the material effectively.

Security and safety have been paramount considerations in designing Cranbury Elementary School. The layout adheres to state recommendations, with a single entry point for the school. The media space's large windows and others throughout the building are reinforced for safety and can be covered with automated blinds in emergencies.

Cranbury Elementary School sets a new standard in a world where education and safety go hand in hand. It's not just a school; it's a haven for learning, growth, and creativity. As we enter the 2023-24 academic year, the Cranbury Elementary School stands as a beacon of innovation and promise, a space where young minds will shape their futures in an environment that celebrates both their potential and safety.

A New Year Begins: Norwalk Students Return to School Amidst Exciting Changes

The anticipation has been building, the backpacks have been packed, and the alarm clocks have been set – it's that time of year again when students across Norwalk are returning to the classrooms for another academic journey. As the school bells ring out this week, the hallways of Norwalk Public Schools will once again come alive with the hustle and bustle of eager students ready to embark on a year of learning, growth, and new experiences.

With the dawn of this academic year, some students are being welcomed back into familiar spaces that have been recently transformed, while others are stepping into brand-new schools that have just been completed. The excitement is palpable, not only because of the fresh start that each new school year brings but also due to the changes and improvements that await both students and staff.

This week marks the beginning of classes for an estimated 11,317 students across Norwalk's 22 schools. This week is especially notable for many of these students as they step into spaces that have undergone remarkable changes. One of the most eagerly awaited projects, the new Cranbury Elementary School, is a testament to Norwalk's commitment to providing top-notch educational facilities. With its construction now complete, the students of Cranbury Elementary School will enjoy a modern and vibrant learning environment that will undoubtedly enhance their educational experience.

But it's not just the physical spaces that are transforming. Norwalk Public Schools welcomed 107 new staff members, including 68 fresh faces in the teaching profession. These educators bring enthusiasm, innovation, and a passion for helping students reach their full potential. Their presence underscores the school district's dedication to providing quality education and support to every student who walks through the doors.

Change is also evident in the leadership positions of some schools. Nathan Hale Middle School welcomes a new principal and assistant principal, while Roton Middle School, Brookside Elementary School, and Rowayton Elementary School welcome new assistant principals.
