U.S. Department of Education's commitment to Raise the Bar & Lead the World

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona laid out his vision for the Department's direction in 2023 to promote academic excellence, improve learning conditions, and prepare our students for a world where global engagement is critical to our nation’s standing. In his address, Secretary Cardona remarked that “Raise the Bar: Lead the World” is not a list of new priorities but a call to strengthen our will to transform education for the better, building on approaches that we know work in education.

Raise the Bar incorporates three pillars:

  • Achieve Academic Excellence through efforts to accelerate learning for every student and deliver a comprehensive and rigorous education for every student;

  • Boldly Improve Learning Conditions through efforts to eliminate the educator shortage for every school and invest in every student’s mental health and well-being; and

  • Create Pathways for Global Engagement through efforts to ensure every student has a pathway to college and career and provide every student a pathway to multilingualism.

Carver Students Soar to New Heights at Sky Zone: A Memorable Outing for Rising 6th Graders in the Summer Transition Program

Carver students attending the Summer Transition Programs at Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy and West Rocks Middle School recently embarked on an exhilarating outing to Sky Zone, the world's largest operator of trampoline and active entertainment parks. As they hit the runway and bid farewell to gravity, they discovered new excitement and fun while preparing for the exciting journey that awaits them in the coming school year.

Sky Zone, known for maximizing Next Level Fun, provided the perfect environment for Carver students to unleash their energy and creativity. Amidst the climbing, flips, jumps, and laughter, the young learners found themselves in a space that celebrated movement, self-expression, and individuality. The experience wasn't just a thrilling adventure and essential in fostering physical and cognitive development.

The Summer Transition Program at Carver is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition for rising 6th graders, helping them acclimate to their new schools, teachers, and peers before the academic year starts. Spearheaded by Michael Richards, a passionate Social Studies Teacher at West Rocks Middle School, and Joe Giandurco, an enthusiastic educator at Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy, the Carver Lead Program Coordinators worked tirelessly to create enriching experiences for the students throughout the year.

As the day at Sky Zone unfolded, it became evident that this outing offered much more than a mere adventure. The thrill of bouncing off trampolines and conquering gravity not only left the students exhilarated but also had a positive impact on their cognitive abilities. Studies have shown that physical activity plays a crucial role in enhancing brain function and promoting overall well-being.

The Summer Transition Program at Carver recognizes the value of holistic development and understands that fostering a strong mind-body connection is vital for a successful academic journey. Enrichment Camps Galore: This year, Carver is operating not one, not two, but THREE Enrichment Camps in different locations. Whether at the Carver Community Center, the new SONO Elementary School, or our After the Bell Enrichment Camp, you'll find incredible activities to spark your curiosity and ignite your passion.

Smooth Transitions: Transitioning to a new grade can be exciting and nerve-wracking. That's why Carver is here to make it a breeze with our seven Summer Transition Programs. Rising 6th graders from Nathan Hale, Ponus, Roton, and West Rocks Middle Schools, as well as rising 9th graders from Brien McMahon and Norwalk High Schools and P-TECH Norwalk, can join us for a summer filled with camaraderie, skill-building, and confidence-boosting adventures.

After the Bell Delight: We believe the fun shouldn't stop when the sun goes down. That's why Carver operates the After the Summer Bell program in the afternoons, exclusively for NPS students entering grades 1 through 4 attending the NPS Summer Academy. Prepare for a fantastic blend of learning and play to keep your summer spirits soaring!

Adventures at Side by Side: Carver's summer program at Side by Side Charter School is a hub of excitement. Dive into a world of discovery, creativity, and friendship as you embark on captivating activities that will leave you wanting more. Side by Side is the place to be this summer!

Wilderness Wonder at The Ecology School: Last year, Carver launched its sleepaway camp program at The Ecology School in Maine for rising 6th graders. Guess what? We're back again this summer for another round of incredible adventures! Prepare to explore the enchanting woods, dive into refreshing waters, and roam the picturesque fields of The Ecology School at the breathtaking River Bend Farm. It's a historic 105-acre farm nestled along a scenic bend in the Saco River, just a short distance from the beautiful Maine coast.

So, whether you're into science, arts, or sports or want to make new friends and have a blast, Carver has something incredible waiting for you this summer. It's time to embrace the sunshine, spread your wings, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Don't miss the Carver Summer Extravaganza—it will be a blast!

Carver Summer Interns Gain a Career Jumpstart at Norwalk Hospital

While other rising seniors and rising college freshman might spend their summer mornings catching up on sleep, Damaly Mendez, Ashley Fernandez, Cynthia Sainrilus, and Madison Watts arrive at Norwalk Hospital at 8 a.m., Monday through Friday. They don their badges and head straight to work: shadowing nurses and doctors at orientation, processing files, providing clerical support in the E.R., and lending a hand to the Human Resources department. These Carver students are dually excited and serious, dedicated to learning as much as they can during their month at one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States.

“It’s an incredible experience,” Damaly says. “I’ll be studying Nursing at Quinnipiac, and this opportunity to intern in the H.R. department gives me a whole new understanding of hospital administration.” “It’s really exciting too,” Cynthia says. “Even though my day-to-day is paperwork, I get to work in the Emergency Room. While I’m filing, there are babies being born just around the corner—and you know when it happens, because they’ll play a lullaby over the intercom.”

“I’ve been processing files for every nurse and patient care tech, sorting out their certifications like their VLS and ACLS,” says Ashley. “But my favorite thing is getting to experience the culture that all the nurses have with each other. They know each other really well; they’re a family.”

“It’s really cool to see how they maneuver through the hospital,” Madison adds. “There’s so much going on all the time. It’s so communicative. Today I learned about handheld audits: if someone does something incorrectly, it goes into the database with a survey. It lets the hospital as a whole know who’s on track and who’s having trouble. And then they look out for each other. It’s corrective as it needs to be, but it’s so collaborative and supportive.”

When asked about how this internships compares to their previous work experiences, our Carver kids emphasized how involved they get to be. “It’s really different. In past work experiences, it felt like everyone was in their own world. Here everyone is a close-knit team. And they involve us in work that matters.” Beyond providing clerical support, Carver interns also shadow nurses and doctors as they go about their day. As a Code Blue comes over the intercom, our students’ ears pricked up: “Blue is an adult medical emergency. Likely respiratory or cardiac arrest.”

“I think people would expect a pre-college internship to be boring. But being here has been really fun. It motivates me to get up and go in the mornings,” Ashley says. “This gives me something to feel really proud of this summer,” Madison says. “Our work is appreciated. It feels good to help out, even when it’s something comparatively minor.”

When asked about what they plan to take away with them from the internship, our students said they appreciated the relationship building. “Not only did we get hands-on experience, but we were able to connect with nurses and doctors. Getting to meet role models in the industry has been irreplaceable.”

About Our Students: Damaly Mendez will be a Nursing Major at Quinnipiac University this coming fall. Ashley Fernandez will be pursuing Health Science at Sacred Heart University. Cynthia Sainrilus will be entering her senior year at Brien McMahon and she dreams of becoming an optometrist. Madison is also a rising high school senior and plans to ultimately become a travel nurse.

Greetings, adventure seekers!

Summer break is here, and while some might envision lazy days under the sun, the rising 9th graders of Brien McMahon High School are embarking on an exhilarating journey with Carver's Summer Transition Program. Led by the inspiring Sarah Molinelli, a devoted Special Education and English teacher, as well as Carver's after-school Lead Program Coordinator, this program is taking these students to new heights - quite literally!

The excitement has been building, and with eager smiles, the students set out for The Adventure Park, an awe-inspiring "adventure in the trees." This park is no ordinary ropes course; it's a place where young climbers can select from an array of "aerial trails" among the forest canopy. Climbing from tree platform to tree platform, they navigate challenge bridges made of cable, wood, and rope while discovering intertwined zip lines bound to set their hearts racing and adrenaline pumping!

At The Adventure Park, safety is the utmost priority, and participants are securely harnessed with the Park's innovative "always locked on" system of interlocking safety clips. With their harnesses doubly secured to safety cables, our Carver summer students are free to unleash their adventurous spirits, conquering low- and high-rope courses with confidence and enthusiasm.

This unique experience isn't just about having a good time and fostering personal growth and development. Sarah Molinelli and the dedicated team have designed this Summer Transition Program to provide an environment where students can challenge themselves, overcome obstacles, and build meaningful connections with their peers.

The Adventure Park's trails are color-coded, accommodating climbers of all experience levels. From beginners seeking introductory challenges to seasoned adventurers ready for advanced feats, there's something for everyone. As these rising 9th graders support and encourage each other along the way, they gain more than just a sense of accomplishment; they develop crucial teamwork skills and resilience that will serve them well as they navigate the uncharted territory of high school.

Through this exhilarating escapade, these young learners are honing their physical abilities and nurturing their mental and emotional fortitude. Unleashing the Power of STEM: Mad Science Inspires Young Minds at Carver's After the Summer Bell Program!

Hey there, science enthusiasts! Today, we have an exciting story to share that will ignite your curiosity and show you how much fun learning about science can be. Recently, Mad Science, the world's leading science enrichment provider, paid a visit to Carver's After the Summer Bell (ATSB) program at Kendall Elementary School, and the experience was nothing short of mind-blowing!

The ATSB program is designed to keep young minds engaged and curious even during the sunny months. This afternoon program welcomes students from grades 1 through 4 who attend the morning NPS Summer School. Mad Science ensured they had an unforgettable time while learning about some fascinating STEM principles.

Upon entering the vibrant classroom, the atmosphere was charged with excitement and wonder. The Mad Science team, armed with their passion for teaching and a myriad of captivating experiments, was all set to make science come alive for these young learners. The theme of the day: "Air, Gas, and Airflow."

With a plethora of visually stimulating props and interactive demonstrations, the Mad Science teaching scientists in white lab coats began their captivating session. The children's eyes sparkled with amazement as they were introduced to the world of spheres, air patterns, and airflow. The hands-on approach Mad Science is famous for allowing the students to actively participate in the experiments, making their learning experience all the more impactful.

One of the highlights of the day was a simple yet mesmerizing experiment. The challenge was to see if our students could fill it up a tube with air by breathing into it. As you can imagine, this triggered a chorus of laughter and excitement. The room was soon filled with kids huffing and puffing, eagerly observing their tubes for any signs of success. Witnessing how science turned into a fun game sparked the kids' curiosity and encouraged them to think critically about airflow and gas properties.

Throughout the session, the Mad Science team provided clear explanations, ensuring that complex scientific concepts were broken down into digestible bites for these young curious minds. With boundless enthusiasm, they answered questions, encouraged discussions, and fostered a sense of wonder that is the foundation of all scientific discovery.

The students left the classroom with a newfound appreciation for science and the natural world around them. The magic of Mad Science had left an indelible mark on their hearts, igniting a passion for learning and exploration that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Making Waves and Memories: Carver Summer Transition Program Delights Rising 6th Graders with Fun-filled Beach Day

As the warm summer sun graces the sandy shores of Connecticut, a remarkable program is in full swing at Roton Middle School. The Carver Summer Transition Program, led by the talented and dedicated Dean Vaccaro, is providing rising 6th graders with an unforgettable experience before they embark on their exciting journey to middle school in the fall.

Dean Vaccaro, a National Board Certified Teacher and the Director of R.A.M.S., Carver's After-school Program, has been orchestrating a summer transition program beyond the traditional orientation. With a focus on both learning and play, this program aims to introduce the incoming students to their new school environment while fostering a sense of camaraderie among them.

Recently, the program treated the kids to a day of pure bliss at the beach, where the laughter of young minds echoed in harmony with the gentle waves. The day kicked off with an hour of Mini Golf, where friendships blossomed as students showcased their putting skills and shared light-hearted banter.

Following the mini golf adventure, the students embarked on a captivating marine science beach walk guided by Blair Stokes, a Marine Biology teacher from Brien McMahon High School. With fascinating insights into the marine ecosystem, the kids explored the wonders of the shoreline and gained an appreciation for the natural world around them.

Of course, what is a beach day without dipping one's toes into the refreshing ocean waters? The students had ample time to splash around and enjoy the thrill of the Long Island Sound, creating cherished memories they'll carry with them throughout their lives.

But the fun didn't end there! The program made sure to cater to all interests, providing opportunities to play on the beach playground and in the ever-entertaining Gaga ball pit. Witnessing the kids relish these moments of joy was a delightful sight, their laughter resonating across the beach.

Later in the day, the students were treated to a fantastic lunch at Ripka's Beach Cafe. With full stomachs and hearts, they savored their meals and relished the company of newfound friends. And, to top it all off, ice cream awaited them as a sweet reward for their outstanding behavior and enthusiasm throughout the day.

Dean Vaccaro couldn't be prouder of this remarkable group of students. Intelligent, fun-loving, well-behaved, and respectful, these rising 6th graders have indeed embodied the spirit of being part of the Carver community.

With the resounding success of this beach day, plans are already underway for a second beach trip next Wednesday. The program continues to empower these young minds with the tools they need to embrace the challenges of middle school while ensuring they create memories that will last a lifetime.

Carver Kids Learn the Joy of Birdwatching with Student Volunteer, Avery Cotton!

In the summer months, we all tend to become amateur birdwatchers. From spotting a sparrow on the way to work to marveling at a hawk wheeling over a Saturday morning hike, birds encourage a brief moment of meditation. We love their songs, plumage, and grace of movement. But how many birds do you know by name? Who authored the song outside your kitchen window?

Carver kids can tell you, thanks to Avery Cotton! Avery, a New Canaan High School student and friend of the Carver, has been sharing his passion for birding with our programs since last year. Avery is an active volunteer at the New Canaan Land Trust, and along with his father, Newell, was responsible for digitally documenting nearly 100 different species of bird on the preserves. He returned to Carver to once again teach our students the magic of bird watching and the importance of conservation. Here are the highlights of Avery’s enrichment program if you too want to learn the basics of birding!

Birding 101:

  • Incredible Diversity: There are over 400+ species of bird in Connecticut! Some backyard birds include distinctive feathered faces, like the blue-jay or the red-bellied woodpecker. But our local birds are just a drop in the bucket: there are over 10,000 species worldwide!

  • Identifying at a Glance: Many birds are naturally camouflaged. When you see one, it’s important to quickly note traits if you want an ID! Avery recommends checking body shape, body size, bill/beak shape, colors, patterns, and behaviors. Novice birders can also employ the aid of the eBird app or website—a digital compendium of bird sightings by location that Avery himself regularly adds to.

  • Perceiving Other Clues: Despite the fact many birders rock binoculars, birding doesn’t stop at what you can see. Avery advises to go slow and keep your ears open. To know the birds is to also know their habitat, their migration timing, and their likelihood to startle.

  • Getting Out in the Field: While our backyards are excellent starting places, Connecticut is host to a variety of other habitats and open parks. Birders should consider visiting the New Canaan Land Trust, the Greenwich Audubon Center, Sherwood Island State Park, or any of the other conserved natural areas nearby! You would be surprised at how quickly the denizens change from habitat to habitat.

  • Respect the Natural World: As always, when enjoying the great outdoors, show consideration for those who live there. Leave only footprints!
