Our after-school students at Side by Side Charter School teamed up with their parents at MSquash!

Students and parents spent an afternoon at MSquash in Norwalk, trying out a brand new mixed-reality sports court called Mball. Engaging parents is a high priority at Carver, which is why we weave activities like this one into all of our after-school and summer programming.

Carver students and parents got a healthy dose of exercise while learning the basics of squash on the Mball courts at MSquash. These courts enable children to practice their hand-eye coordination and improve their cognitive skills - while having a blast in the most playful way! The company says, “it’s like a computer game but with the benefit of physical activity.”

Many thanks to our gracious hosts and Side by Side employees for making this fun event possible!

Help Carver transform more lives on GivingTuesday!

Today is Giving Tuesday!

With your gift, Carver, along with our many education partners, changes the life trajectories of our young scholars. Through our innovative, evidence-based programming and your support our vision to ensure a future where all children succeed can become reality.

Giving Tuesday was founded in 2012 as a global generosity movement working to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

How will you join in the celebration?

Carver thanks the John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation!

Martin McLaughlin, President and Trustee of the John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation, standing with Novelette Peterkin, Carver’s CEO

For the fifth year in a row, the John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation is supporting our work at the Classical Studies Magnet Academy in Bridgeport. This year, the foundation awarded Carver a tremendous grant of $25,000!

The mission of the John and Ethel Kashulon Foundation is to improve people’s lives through the funding of programs whose mission and projects align with its three unified goals of enhancing Educational, Children’s and Cultural opportunities.

Ethel Orco Kashulon was a lifelong Bridgeport resident until her passing in 2017. She graduated from Saints Cyril and Methodius Commercial High School and immediately began working at the Bridgeport Housing Authority, where she was recognized as being their longest serving employee, retiring at age seventy after fifty-three years of employment.

For many years, Mrs. Kashulon also worked at the family business, Kashulon’s Market, on Sheridan Street in Bridgeport. Devout Catholics, she and her husband, John Kashulon, had been active members of Saint Cyril and Methodius Parish, Bridgeport for over fifty years. John Kashulon and Ethel were married on Halloween, October 31, 1960, and enjoyed 36 years of marriage until the passing of Mr. Kashulon.

The foundation was created in their memory and the Carver community is deeply grateful for being one of the earliest recipients of the foundation's thoughtful giving.

Carver is very enthusiastic about and proud of our partnership with the Classical Studies Magnet Academy in Bridgeport.

This is a "themed" Pre-K to 8th-grade public school in Bridgeport’s West Side neighborhood for more than 400 students. Its curriculum of classical literature, art, and music utilizes the Paideia instructional methodology (traditional lecturing, coaching, and the Socratic method of extended discussion). Instruction is project-based, involving frequent assemblies, presentations, and field trips.

CSMA occupies a 123-year-old structure, the oldest school still in use by the district.

Carver's 2021 Annual Meeting. See the stories and the outcomes!

We gathered yesterday evening for Carver’s Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors. It was also a time for the Carver community to gather with us to hear and participate in this important review of where Carver has been and where we are going.

SEE THE ANUAL MEETING REPORT HERE.

Our staff, program partners, school administrators, donors, elected officials, students, volunteers (including our Volunteer of the Year!), and many others joined us for this virtual meeting.

The annual meeting is the time for the Board of Directors to evaluate the organization's progress towards its mission and reaffirm the goals we’ve set for this fiscal year.

The treasurer provided a financial report for the board to review and the budget for the current year and the chairs of the other board committees presented their reports as well.

We are humbled by the outpouring of support and renewed dedication to doing our best for our youth. Our collective impact over this extraordinarily challenging year was tremendous. Our mission has never been more relevant or essential, and we have proven that we all possess the resilience and strength for the journey ahead.
