NASCAR launches STEM education partnership

NASCAR Kids and the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) are launching a new science and STEM program for teachers across the United States.

Through NSTA.org, K-8 science teachers have free access to science lesson plans on aerodynamics, friction and motion, light, sound, and more. NASCAR and NSTA created the lesson plans.

“We are thrilled to partner with NSTA, a passionate community of science educators and professionals devoted to teaching and offering science resources to kids across the country,” said Pete Jung, chief marketing officer for NASCAR. “This collaboration provides NASCAR an incredible opportunity to make an impact in science education while introducing new generations to the sport.”

There will be 18 racing-themed lesson plans and a STEM at the Track resource guide on the NSTA’s website.

Online Town Hall meeting this evening to address questions about return to school conditions

A town hall webinar will be streamed on the Norwalk Public Schools’ YouTube channel from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. this evening to answer questions regarding the start of the 2021-2022 school year under pandemic conditions at the city’s public schools. Superintendent Dr. Alexandra Estrella will attempt to address the concerns of families.

Estrella will inform the community about the state’s requirement for masks in school and its direction that all schools return to in-person instruction.

The town hall webinar will be recorded and available on the school’s YouTube channel for later viewing. A live interpretation will also be available in Spanish and Haitian Creole.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced on Tuesday that face masks will be mandatory in Connecticut K-12 schools for at least the first month of the academic year.

The governor’s executive order expires on Sept. 30, but the mask mandate may likely be renewed.

St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church (on the left at the corner of East Rocks Road and Half Mile Road in Norwalk) is a wonderful faith community that includes Carver kids in their giving.

They delivered a huge gift of school supplies today in preparation for the new school year.

Rooted in the Gospel and Catholic social tradition, the St. Jerome Social Concerns Committee strives to create educational and service opportunities in concert with community agencies like Carver to achieve a more just and humane world.

We are grateful to the Committee Co-chairs Barbara Bagnato and Rebecca Sweeney, the many Committee Members, and the entire St. Jerome community for thinking of and caring for Carver's kids and families. THANK YOU!

The final day of Carver summer camp!

For most kids, there is usually only one rule for summer camp: "Astonish us!" And that we did with field trips, new friends, academic and scientific discoveries, and great memories to last a lifetime.

Summer camp at the Carver Community Center and Columbus Magnet School ended Friday with festivities and well-wishes for the upcoming school year.

Our youth enjoyed a sense of community, developed intergenerational relationships, and learned through first-hand experiences.

Trained, caring adult role models helped our campers feel loved, capable, and included. Camp helped our children grow by providing a supervised, positive environment that had safety as one of its primary commitments.

Carver summer learning programs were more important than ever this year to help students begin to recover from the learning loss, isolation, and trauma of the past year of the pandemic. There was unprecedented urgency and investment to increase access to, and expand the role of, summer learning programs to provide recovery from the past year.

Summer 2021 was a time for fun, exploration, and learning — but in different ways from the traditional school year or summer school. This summer, we re-sparked students’ interests and engagement to prepare them to return to school in a few weeks.

Our summer literacy program, facilitated by certified teachers, used the myON and Lexia Reading Core 5 software to provide personalized learning. Certified teachers also taught math sessions, the two primary programs were TimezAttack and ThinkCentral. TimezAttack is a computer-based math fact game that strongly supports fact fluency. ThinkCentral is the online component of the GO Math Common Core math program used in NPS K-5 classes. Computer Adaptive (CAT) interventions address individual strengths and weaknesses.

Free yoga lessons at The Norwalk Art Space, Wednesday, 8/25, ages 7 & up!

Carver youth and families are invited to a FREE yoga class at The Norwalk Art Space on Wednesday, August 25th, from 9 am to 10 am.

Ages are 7 and up and kids under 13 should be accompanied by an adult.

Rebekah Jacobs of Sama Yoga is the teacher and she’s absolutely wonderful.

She can teach you how mindfulness and yoga can help with creativity and life in general.

Total beginners absolutely welcome.

United Nations "International Youth Day" is today!

The theme of International Youth Day 2021, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, highlights the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

During the 2021 ECOSOC Youth Forum (EYF), the issues and priorities highlighted by young participants included the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly related to its effect on human health, the environment, and food systems. As part of the official outcome recommendations of the EYF, young participants stressed the importance of working towards more equitable food systems. In addition, they highlighted the need for youth to make informed decisions on food choices through increasing global education on the healthiest and most sustainable options for both individuals and the environment. There were also recommendations on providing adequate capacity development with respect to the resilience of food systems, in particular during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in its aftermath.
