Carver Awarded Four Prestigious 21st Century Grants to Empower Norwalk Students
Carver is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded four multi-year 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grants totaling $1,770,900 ($590,300 per year over three years), an extraordinary achievement that underscores our commitment to advancing educational opportunities.
These grants will fund Carver’s after-school programs at Kendall College and Career Academy, Brookside Elementary School, Tracey Magnet School, and Fox Run Elementary School.
Administered by the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE), the 21st CCLC initiative is the only federal funding source dedicated exclusively to after-school programs. Out of 35 grants awarded statewide, four were secured by Carver, an achievement that reflects the trust placed in our innovative programming.
At each school, the Carver program is led by a certified teacher who serves as the Lead Program Coordinator and works closely with principals to deliver impactful programs. Supported by certified and non-certified staff, program providers such as the Maritime Aquarium, and dedicated volunteers, these programs offer a combination of academic support, authentic STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) experiences, and critical social-emotional learning.
Spotlight on Fox Run Elementary School
The Fox Run Elementary School program is a shining example of Carver's approach to educational enrichment. 45 fourth and fifth graders will be served this academic year over 128 program days. Running four days a week for 2.5 hours daily, the program integrates academic, STEAM, and wellness activities that prepare students for future success.
Highlights of the Fox Run Program:
STEAM Enrichment Activities:
Mad Science NASA Academy of Future Space Explorers: Students will launch rockets, assemble satellites, and explore the challenges of space travel.
Maritime Aquarium Programs: From studying intertidal habitats to learning the science of diving, students explore marine science through hands-on sessions.
Technology Integration: Students will use coding platforms like Scratch, digital photography, and video editing, fostering creativity and technical skills.
Engineering Challenges: Projects such as designing aluminum foil boats, building drone models, and constructing marble roller coasters combine fun with learning.
Arts and Creativity:
Partnering with the Silvermine Arts Center, students will explore color mixing, self-portraits, clay modeling, and seasonal observations, fostering artistic expression.
Hands-on projects like creating 3D color wheels and paper name sculptures blend art with engineering skills.
Family Engagement and Wellness:
Carver programming is designed to support families by offering them educational development opportunities and providing a safe environment for students when school is not in session. Events such as Family Movie Nights, Bowling Nights, and a Cinco de Mayo celebration unite the community, creating a supportive network for students and their families.
Social-emotional learning is integrated into the program using evidence-based curricula like RULER and ReThink.
Innovative Math and Science Integration:
Students will conduct experiments on water filtration, heat capacity, and temperature density, reinforcing STEM concepts with practical applications.
Cooking sessions blend math skills with culinary exploration, teaching budgeting, measurements, and cultural appreciation.
Fox Run’s program epitomizes Carver’s mission to advance excellence through strategic partnerships with schools and communities. It provides a safe, enriching environment for students when school is not in session while supporting families with educational opportunities.
A Model for Success
Carver's 21st CCLC programs address a critical need for targeted academic and STEAM enrichment activities. These programs equip students for global competitiveness and ensure they advance to the next grade prepared. They foster self-confidence, collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, empowering students to achieve their full potential.
As we celebrate this incredible achievement, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Connecticut State Department of Education, our program partners, dedicated staff, and volunteers. Together, we are shaping brighter futures for our students and their families.
