Carver’s Commitment to ‘Lead the World’: How We’re Aligning with the U.S. Department of Education’s Vision for Academic Excellence and Global Competitiveness

The Carver equips all learners for global competitiveness by leading strategic partnerships with schools and communities that advance excellence and growth opportunities.

— The Carver Mission Statement

The U.S. Department of Education unveiled an ambitious new report, Lead the World, outlining a comprehensive plan to ensure all students receive the quality education necessary to fulfill their potential and contribute to “…a globally competitive society.” At the heart of this initiative are key focus areas such as achieving academic excellence, improving learning conditions, enhancing mental health support, creating pathways for global engagement, and making college more affordable and accessible.

At Carver, we share this vision and are already taking significant steps to contribute to its fulfillment. For decades, Carver has been a cornerstone in the community, offering after-school and summer programs that support students who need it most. Our commitment to academic excellence is evident in our tailored tutoring and enrichment programs that address learning gaps and enhance student performance, particularly in underserved communities.

Recognizing the importance of mental health and learning conditions, Carver integrates social-emotional learning into all our programs, ensuring that students excel academically and develop resilience and well-being. We provide safe and supportive environments where students can thrive, reinforced by a dedicated team of educators and mentors.

In line with the report’s call for global engagement and multilingualism, Carver’s programs include exposure to diverse cultures and languages, preparing students to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world. Our college readiness initiatives align with the Department’s goals, offering paid internships, college tours, and guidance and resources to make higher education accessible and achievable for all our students.

The Lead the World report emphasizes the need for systemic change in education, and Carver is proud to be part of this transformative effort. By enhancing educator support, diversifying our teaching staff, and aligning our goals with national strategies, we are helping to prepare the next generation for global competitiveness and success.

As we continue to serve the community, Carver remains committed to contributing to the fulfillment of the U.S. Department of Education’s vision. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to lead the world.

NOTE: Carver has been a proud and consistent recipient of the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grants for years. This initiative is the only federal funding source supporting local after-school, before-school, and summer learning programs. Serving over 1.5 million youth and their families, 21st CCLC grants are awarded by state education agencies, with funds allocated based on each state's share of Title I funding for low-income students. These grants support local schools and community-based organizations, like Carver, in providing students with critical after-school and summer learning programs. The 21st CCLC program was reauthorized in 2015 as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Honoring a Legacy: The George Washington Carver National Monument and Its Role in American History

The George Washington Carver National Monument is a powerful tribute to one of America's most revered scientists, educators, and humanitarians — and The Carver’s namesake!

Nestled in the serene landscape of Newton County, Missouri, this historic site preserves George Washington Carver's boyhood home, a man whose innovations and contributions to agriculture and environmentalism continue to inspire generations.

Founded on July 14, 1943, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the George Washington Carver National Monument is the first national monument dedicated to an African American and the first to honor someone who was not a president. This monumental recognition came just six months after Carver's death and five years after the Carver community in Norwalk established its first George Washington Carver Community Center, cementing his legacy as a pioneer in agricultural science.

The monument is a living museum where history, nature, and education converge. The 240-acre park, with its rolling hills, woodlands, and prairies, offers visitors a glimpse into Carver's early life and the environment that shaped his worldview. The site includes the 1881 Moses Carver house, the Carver cemetery, and an interactive exhibit area for students, making it a hub of learning and reflection.

As we approach the 8th annual Storytelling Day on Saturday, August 24th, the monument will again become a focal point for celebrating American culture and history. This event, co-sponsored by the Carver Birthplace Association, will feature dynamic storytellers sharing diverse narratives, connecting us to our past and inspiring our future. The event also commemorates the 108th anniversary of the National Park Service, an agency that has played a crucial role in preserving America's natural and cultural heritage.

George Washington Carver's life was one of overcoming adversity and using his knowledge to uplift others. Born into slavery around 1864, Carver became a leading agricultural scientist. His work at the Tuskegee Institute, where he developed methods to improve soil quality and promoted alternative crops like peanuts and sweet potatoes, was groundbreaking. Carver's innovative techniques helped poor farmers increase their yields and improve their quality of life, all while promoting sustainable farming practices.

Carver's legacy extends beyond agriculture. He pioneered environmentalism and was a respected figure in black and white communities during an era of significant racial divide. His accolades, including being dubbed a "Black Leonardo" by Time magazine in 1941, highlight the impact of his work on society.

Today, the George Washington Carver National Monument is a beacon of inspiration, reminding us of the importance of education, environmental stewardship, and perseverance. As we celebrate Storytelling Day, let us reflect on the stories that have shaped our nation and honor the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to improving the world.

Visitors to the George Washington Carver National Monument walk in the footsteps of a great American and gain insight into the values that drive progress and innovation. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, someone seeking inspiration, or a member of our ever-growing Carver community, the monument offers something for everyone. It is a place where the past meets the present and where the story of George Washington Carver continues to unfold.

Carver's Systems Thinking: Driving Lasting Change Through Holistic and Collaborative Approaches

At Carver, we are committed to addressing the unique needs of our K-12 students and families we serve by employing a systems-thinking approach. This method allows us to be a crucial link between various stakeholders—school districts, governments, businesses, philanthropies, and communities—enabling us to adapt and respond to emerging challenges swiftly and effectively.

Our systems thinking is not just about addressing immediate issues; it is a holistic, long-term process that delves deep into the interconnected components and root causes of our challenges. Here are the key elements that define Carver’s approach to systems change:

  1. Adaptive Learning:
While the basic structure of our afterschool programs remains the same, i.e., homework assistance, STEAM enrichment, workforce development, and wellness programming, we constantly adjust our incremental strategies based on ongoing assessments. This dynamic process ensures that our programs remain practical and relevant, evolving through continuous feedback from the communities and systems we engage with.

  2. Solving for the Root Cause:
Carver goes beyond surface-level solutions, focusing on transforming the underlying attitudes, norms, and practices that contribute to the challenges we tackle. By addressing these root causes, we drive meaningful and sustainable change.

  3. Multidisciplinary Approaches:
We integrate various methods, combining advocacy, research, grassroots work, and technology. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to create comprehensive strategies for transforming systems on multiple levels.

  4. Ethical Considerations:
Carver’s commitment to social justice and equity is at the forefront of our work. We ensure that our interventions are designed thoughtfully, avoiding any unintentional perpetuation of harm or inequality.

  5. Long-Term Vision:
Meaningful systems change does not happen overnight. Carver recognizes the need for sustained efforts, focusing on long-term outcomes beyond immediate outputs. Our vision is always on the horizon as we create a lasting impact.

  6. Collaboration:
Collaboration is critical to our success. We exchange knowledge, share experiences, and foster innovative approaches to drive systems change. By working with various stakeholders, we amplify our impact and ensure that solutions are well-rounded and sustainable.

  7. Building Trust with Funders:
At Carver, we understand that building strong, long-term relationships with our funders is crucial. We go beyond periodic engagement through reports by addressing funder concerns, accommodating feedback mechanisms, and providing candid, transparent updates. This trust-building process is essential to sustaining the support necessary for long-term change.

Carver focuses on long-term outcomes rather than quick fixes. By building solid partnerships, embracing new ideas, and committing to a holistic systems-thinking approach, we effectively tackle challenges and drive lasting, meaningful changes in the communities we serve.

Together, we are building a better future that is equitable, just, and sustainable for all.

They embody the spirit of collaboration and innovation, bringing together individuals, communities, and resources to tackle some of society’s most pressing challenges.

At Carver, we are proud to be part of this vibrant nonprofit sector. Our mission is to empower youth through education, enrichment, and community engagement. The Power of STEAM: The Carver’s Commitment to Integrating the Arts into our Programming

At The Carver, education is more than a means to an end—it is an experience that ignites curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong passion for learning. This philosophy is at the heart of our approach to STEAM education, where we integrate the arts into our traditional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) afterschool and summer programs to create a more holistic and enriching educational experience for our students.

Incorporating the arts into our programming is a crucial element that allows our students to reach their full potential. The “A” in STEAM represents various disciplines, including liberal arts, language arts, social studies, physical arts, fine arts, and music—and in the case of this blog post, dance!

By weaving these subjects into the fabric of our STEM curriculum, we allow our students to explore and express their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.

We enthusiastically appreciate the work of national leaders in this area, such as Turnaround Arts, a national program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Founded in 2011 by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities under the leadership of former First Lady Michelle Obama, Turnaround Arts is based on the belief that high-quality and integrated arts education can play a significant role in transforming schools, improving academic achievement, and increasing student engagement, particularly in schools facing some of the toughest educational challenges.

Turnaround Arts operates in 60 schools nationwide, including in Bridgeport, where Carver serves students and families in five schools: the Classical Studies Magnet Academy during the school year and the Geraldine Clayton Magnet Academy, Waltersville School, Interdistrict Discovery Magnet, and Cesar Batalla School in the summer.

We are inspired by the videos displayed here created in partnership with the always joyful Playing for Change, which showcase Turnaround Arts students performing alongside leading creative professionals. These professionals partner with Turnaround Arts schools over the length of the program, working directly with students and teachers, engaging parents and the school community, and highlighting the positive impact of the arts on their school’s transformation.

Playing for Change and Turnaround Arts are incredible nonprofit initiatives that deserve widespread recognition. At Carver, we echo the sentiment that while STEM is crucial for technological advancement, the arts are equally essential for students to achieve their fullest potential. The arts enable students to harness the capabilities of STEM subjects, apply creative thinking to STEM projects, and foster a learning environment where imagination and innovation thrive.

Our STEAM programs encourage students to explore where art naturally fits into STEM subjects. This enhances their learning experience and contributes to developing vital skills such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These skills are foundational for academic success and necessary for a successful career in any field.

Carver is proud to be a leader in helping students gain exposure to hands-on learning, challenging them to think critically and creatively, and providing them with opportunities to apply essential content knowledge in meaningful ways. By integrating the arts into our afterschool and summer programming, we are not just educating students—we are empowering them to become innovative thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and well-rounded individuals who are prepared to succeed in their paths.

Together with like-minded organizations and initiatives, we will continue to advocate for the importance of the arts in education and work tirelessly to ensure that all students can experience the transformative power of STEAM.

Perfect Summer Finale: Carver ATB Kids Enjoy a Day at Sherwood Island State Park

As the sun set on one of the final days of Carver's After the Bell (ATB) summer program, the children, aged 5-11, reveled in a day full of excitement and exploration at Sherwood Island State Park. Connecticut's first state park, Sherwood Island, provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable closing chapter to a summer packed with enrichment activities.

A Day of Discovery and Delight

Sherwood Island, located on Norwalk's scenic shoreline, offered the ATB kids a variety of experiences. The mile-long beach became a playground where the children splashed in the waters of Long Island Sound, collected unique seashells, and built sandcastles. Guided by their dedicated counselors, the children also visited the Living 9-11 Memorial, a poignant reminder of history and a place for quiet reflection amidst the day's fun.

Hands-On Learning in Nature's Classroom

The park’s 235 acres of beach, wetlands, and coastal forest were a vast outdoor classroom. The children on this day at the beach and throughout their ATB summer experience engaged in activities that included science, art, marine science, engineering, and social-emotional learning. At Sherwood Island, they explored the park’s diverse ecosystems, observed coastal wildlife, and learned about the importance of environmental conservation. They marveled at the different plant species, observed birds in their natural habitat, and even spotted some small marine creatures in the tidal pools.

Crafting Memories and Friendships

Throughout the summer, field trips like this one to Sherwood Island provided the children with opportunities to bond with their peers, develop new skills, and build lasting friendships. The culmination of these experiences was evident as the children laughed and played together, celebrating the end of a fantastic summer.

A Rich History of Public Access

Sherwood Island’s story is one of perseverance and public spirit. Almost not becoming a park, the state faced a 23-year battle against wealthy landowners to secure enough land for public access. Finally, in 1914, the state purchased the first piece of land, and today, Sherwood Island stands as a testament to the victory of public recreation over private interests.

Looking Ahead

As the ATB kids bid farewell to summer and look forward to the upcoming school year, the memories made at this summer will undoubtedly stay with them. This enriching experience, like many others provided by Carver’s ATB summer program, has helped to nurture their curiosity, foster a love for nature, and strengthen their social and emotional development.

The Carver community is grateful for another successful summer and looks forward to continuing our mission of providing enriching, educational, and enjoyable experiences for all our students. Here’s to more adventures and learning in the seasons to come!
